Newport Philharmonic Choir Côr Ffilharmonic Casnewydd

The Newport Philharmonic Choir is a mixed SATB Choir with70+ members which meets on Tuesdays (7.15pm – 9.15pm) during school terms to rehearse at Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd (next to Hartridge High School) Ringland. The Choir was formed from the National Eisteddfod Choir, which was held in Newport in 1988, and has gone from strength to strength performing a wide range of music in a variety of languages.

In a typical year we perform a Spring Concert of short pieces of music (folk and pop songs & songs from musicals and operas, as well as sacred music), an Autumn Concert of classical works performed with professional soloists and orchestra, and Christmas concerts. It has also been our custom to sing an anthem in Welsh at the annual St David’s Day service at Newport Cathedral. We also perform for local charities, weddings and civic functions.

Last year’s Christmas Charity Concert in December raised over £1100 for Action for Children. In February this year we shared the stage with Risca Male Choir at the Riverfront Theatre Newport to raise funds for St David’s Foundation Hospice Care.

The Choir has strong links with Oratorienchor Heidenheim in Germany and several exchange visits have been made and joint concerts performed.  Last October we performed Brahms’ Requiem jointly with Oratorienchor Heidenheim, in Newport.

We always welcome new choristers, particularly younger singers, and are currently recruiting in the Tenor and Bass sections.  If you enjoy singing, why not come along and receive expert tuition under the baton of our Musical Director Guy Harbottle, and make new friends in the process?
